Do I Really Need Travel Insurance? A Travel CEO's Honest Answer

Every January, the travel industry publishes its trend forecasts. This year, "geopolitical uncertainty" is dominating the conversation. And yes — the world feels unsettled in real ways.

But here's my honest take: uncertainty isn't a 2026 travel trend. It's just life.

You Already Know This

If you're in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, you know exactly what I mean. This is the season of life where you're managing more moving parts than most people like to acknowledge. Family means aging parents and recently flown-the-nest kids. Your life is one phone call away from someone needing you — right now. Add in care for homes, pets, personal health, friendships, and careers.

Together, it adds up to the beautiful, unpredictable weight of a full life.

None of that is new. And none of it stops when the headlines settle down. So, when I sense a traveler hesitate to commit to a trip because something might come up — I don't argue with them. Because they're 100% right.

What I tell them instead..... that's exactly what travel insurance is for.

The Safety Net That Makes Dreaming Possible

Travel insurance isn't a precaution you take during uncertain times and quietly drop when the world feels stable again. It's not a hack, or a workaround. It's the thing that makes saying yes feel safe. It's what allows you to say yes to the experiences you're dreaming of — with the confidence that if life intervenes, you won't be left absorbing the full weight of it alone.

I believe travel insurance was never optional. It just took 2020 to make that undeniable.

In March 2020, I was working as a consultant for three different travel companies when the world shut down. All three did everything in their power to get refunds to their clients — and I watched firsthand how hard that actually is when non-refundable deposits have already been made and costs have already been incurred, even when no service ever took place. Good intentions aren't enough. The infrastructure simply doesn't exist to make everyone whole.

That experience shaped how I run Conscious Travel Collective. Travel insurance isn't something I recommend as a precaution. It's woven into how we work — not something we sell, but something we genuinely advocate for as part of every trip we plan together.

It's Not Only About the Trip You Might Not Take

It's also about protecting the one you do.

Lost luggage. A sudden illness or injury abroad. A missed connection. An unexpected event mid-journey. These things happen, even on the most beautifully planned trips. The right coverage means that when they do, you're not navigating it alone or absorbing costs that don't need to fall on you.

There's also something deeper at stake — something specific to how CTC works.

The" suppliers" I partner with aren't corporations. They're families. Local guides, small guesthouses, community-rooted experiences — people who have held a date for my travelers for months. Travel insurance is what allows me to honor our commitments to them, even when the unexpected happens on your end. It protects the local access and authentic connections that are the whole reason you're working with a boutique travel company instead of a faceless booking platform.

This is the protection that lets you fully say yes — to the trip, the experiences, and the people who make it all worthwhile.

"I Won't Be Held Hostage by the What-Ifs"

After I shared an earlier version of these thoughts with my newsletter readers, a client wrote back. She travels in her 60s, managing the full complexity of a life that includes caregiving responsibilities, her own health journey, and a deep, unwavering love of travel. Her words stopped me in my tracks — and I asked if I could share them here, because I think they say something I couldn't have said better myself.

She wrote:

"Stuff happens. Things that are often completely out of our control. When I met my oncologist six years ago, she said: 'Your cancer is incurable. My job is to help you live the longest, and best life possible.' So I plan my trips and always purchase travel insurance. These insurance purchases, like my doctor, give me confidence and permission to live my best life. Because stuff happens — but I won't be held hostage by all the possible what-ifs."

That's it. That's the whole philosophy in one paragraph.

Travel insurance isn't about fear. It's about freedom. It's the thing that lets you make the reservation, board the plane, and be fully present — knowing that if something shifts, you have a layer of protection between you and the worst of it.

This client doesn't travel in spite of everything on her plate. She travels because of it. And she does it with her eyes open and her plans protected.

I hope her words land for you the way they did for me.
